Head-On Collision Forces Airport Road to Close
A head-on collision forced Airport Road to close on December 23rd. The accident resulted in 7 people being sent to 3 different hospitals. Both lanes of the road were blocked by the resulting damage.
The crash was reported to have occurred at around 9:40 a.m. Officials were forced to close Airport Road between Prairie Lane and Dersch Road for more than an hour. While the road was closed, law enforcement and medical personnel dealt with the aftermath of the accident. Extra ambulances were needed to accommodate the severity of the injuries caused by the crash.
According to Highway Patrol Sgt. Tim Hinkson, Eziaha Achinefu, age 29, was driving in her Toyota Camry on Airport Road when she approached a vehicle stopped in the road to turn left into a driveway. Hinkson said Achinefu had to swerve to the right to avoid hitting the vehicle and went off the road.
After losing control of the car, the driver swerved back into oncoming traffic and struck head-on into a Dodge pickup. Daryle Guthrie of Redding was driving the Dodge pickup.
In total, seven people suffered injuries as a result of the accident. Four of the accident victims were children. Those who suffered injuries were taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding, Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding, and St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff.
Reports suggest that the most serious injuries sustained in the accident were facial lacerations and a broken wrist.
